Experts discuss hearing loss and how to prevent it

At a recent virtual event, hearing loss experts, Frank Lin M.D and Nicolas Reed talked to AARP editor Neil Wertheimer about hearing loss and how to prevent it. The two experts are co-authors of the book "Hearing Loss for Dummies". which covers all aspects of hearing loss and how to hear better.

AARP is a USA-based organisation that campaigns on issues that affect elderly people. Around half of people aged seventy-five and over suffer from hearing loss, though their decline in hearing may have been slow, and started much earlier time. Hearing loss prevention is important at any age.

In the workplace, there are regulations about wearing ear defenders in noisy environments, but those do not cover noise at home. Frank Lin cites a typical example of excessive noise in the home environment.

"If you are standing next to the lawn mower and you really could not hear someone at arm's length, you should be using hearing protection."

Loud music concerts can also affect hearing. Use ear plugs to protect hearing.

Hearing loss affects communication, relationships and cognitive processing. Frank Lyn believes that hearing loss might be a contributing factor to dementia as it can change the way the brain works.

If people around you appear to be mumbling, it may be a sign that your hearing is diminishing. It is important to have hearing tested. A hearing aid may be required which can be bought online or over the counter.
