New Research Into Covid-19 Transmission:

Planned research by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) aims to discover how Covid-19 is transmitted in the workplace.

Most employees have lifted Covid-19 restrictions and no longer require the workforce to wear PPE facemasks and observe social distancing. However, the threat of another pandemic remains. The HSE wants to better understand how the virus is transmitted and the best way to respond to and limit future Covid-19 outbreaks.

The research, known as the Wear-It Study, is part of the PROJECT V+COVID-19 National Core Study, a government research program that studies the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19. Researchers want to know how the virus spreads in various settings, including the workplace, transport and public areas.

Volunteers will be fitted with small wearable devices which transmit location data to static beacons to monitor the patterns of interactions between workers. This information could be used to help determine optimum future social distancing policies and predict the transmission risk during a Covid-19 outbreak. Workplace size, room characteristics and ventilation help refine these predictions.

The HSE is looking for workplaces with a workforce of at least fifty people to take part in the research. The organisations that volunteer should have large indoor areas such as large offices, food and drink manufacturing areas and warehouses. Any organisation willing to take part in the study should read the invitation letter.

Some organisations are already using technology to research social distancing and are invited to share their findings with the research team at the Wear-It Study.
