  3. University launches occupational health and safety centre

The University of Strathclyde is launching a centre which focuses on research and education relating to workplace health and safety.

The new Strathclyde Centre for Occupational Safety and Health (SCOSH) is a response to the demand for better quality occupational health and safety management. There is a change in how business leaders care for their employees' mental and physical health in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic. The pandemic highlighted the importance of face mask PPE (personal protective equipment) and how to keep safe at work with social distancing and frequent hand washing. The same attention to health and safety can be applied to all health and safety practices.

The centre will create partnerships with academics working on workplace health and safety issues. These safety experts will provide new courses, research, and exchange knowledge on how to improve occupational health and safety.

Students will benefit from learning opportunities offered by SCOSH. One of the first courses to be released in 2023 is an introductory course on health and safety risk management, which is financed by the Scottish Funding Council.

The head of the Strathclyde Centre for Occupational Safety and Health, Callum MacDonald, said:

"The team involved with SCOSH has been delivering online and blended learning relating to health, safety, and risk management for approximately 20 years."

He said that the group of expert professional practitioners involved with SCOSH will help provide learning that can immediately be applied to the workplace.

SCOSH will also offer consultancy support and short-term training courses.
